Questions? We’ve got answers

Check out some of our more frequently asked questions here.

  • The contraceptive ring is a small, flexible plastic ring placed inside the vagina. It steadily releases hormones (oestrogen and progestin) to prevent pregnancy.

  • The contraceptive ring works by steadily releasing two hormones—oestrogen and progestogen—into the bloodstream. These hormones prevent pregnancy in three main ways:

    1. Stopping ovulation – It stops the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.

    2. Thickening cervical mucus – This makes it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

    3. Thinning the womb lining – If an egg were fertilised, it's less likely to implant.

  • You insert the ring yourself and leave it in place for three weeks, then remove it for a one-week break. After that, you insert a new one.

  • Most people don’t feel it at all. It usually stays in place comfortably and shouldn’t interfere with daily life or sex.

  • No, the contraceptive ring does not protect against STIs. Using condoms alongside it can help reduce the risk of infection.

  • If the ring slips out, rinse it with cool water and reinsert it as soon as possible. If it’s out for more than three hours, extra contraception may be needed.

  • Some people may experience mild side effects like breast tenderness, mood changes or spotting. These often settle after a few months.

  • Yes, fertility usually returns quickly once you stop using the ring, often within a few weeks.

  • The ring isn’t right for everyone, especially those with certain health conditions or who smoke and are over 35. We can advise you on which contraceptive option to take.
