Questions? We’ve got answers

Check out some of our more frequently asked questions here.

  • The hormonal coil, also known as an intrauterine system (IUS), is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the womb. It slowly releases a hormone called progestogen, which thickens cervical mucus to block sperm and thins the womb lining to prevent implantation.

  • The hormonal coil is over 99% effective, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available. Once inserted, it works continuously for several years without needing daily attention.

  • Depending on the brand, the hormonal coil can provide protection from pregnancy for 3 to 8 years. We will advise on which type suits your needs best.

  • Some people experience mild discomfort or cramping during insertion, similar to period pain. The procedure is quick and often done in a clinic setting. A local anaesthetic may be offered to ease any discomfort.

  • Yes, it can. Many users find their periods become lighter, shorter or stop altogether over time. It can also help reduce painful periods for some people.

  • Yes, a hormonal coil can be removed by a trained doctor or nurse. It can be removed at any time, and fertility will return to normal as soon after the device is taken out.

  • Yes, fertility usually returns to normal quickly after removal. Some people may become pregnant almost immediately.

  • It may not be suitable for those with certain health conditions, such as active pelvic infections or unexplained vaginal bleeding. A consultation with us will determine if it's right for you.

  • You shouldn’t feel the coil itself, but you may be able to feel the thin threads at the cervix, which are used for removal. If the coil feels uncomfortable, check in with us to discuss your options.

  • Some users experience headaches, acne, mood changes or breast tenderness. These often settle after a few months, but if they persist, let us know.

  • It’s a good idea to check the threads after each period to make sure the coil is still in place. We will show you how to do this during your appointment.
