Microgynon is a combined contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy and eases period pain.
Microgynon isn’t available in Ireland, but there are many free alternatives, if you’re eligible.
Eligibility criteria for free contraception:
Requirement 1.
You’re a person with a uterus.
Requirement 2.
You’re aged between 17 and 35.
Requirement 3.
You’re living in Rep. of Ireland.
Requirement 4.
You’ve a PPS number (PPSN).

Microgynon is primarily used to prevent pregnancy. It may also help with regulating periods, easing menstrual cramps and improving certain skin conditions like acne.

Microgynon contains two hormones that stop the ovaries from releasing an egg. It also thickens cervical mucus and alters the womb lining to prevent fertilisation and implantation.

You take one pill at the same time every day for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break when you usually have a withdrawal bleed. Then you start the next pack.

If you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember—even if that means taking two in one day. Missing more than one may reduce effectiveness, so check the leaflet or consult us.

Some people may experience side effects like nausea, headaches, mood changes or breast tenderness. These often settle after a few months, but speak to us if they persist.

It isn’t right for everyone. If you have a history of blood clots, migraines with aura or certain health conditions, we may recommend an alternative.

No, Microgynon does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. It’s best to use condoms as well for STI protection.

Yes, by skipping the 7-day break and starting the next pack straight away, you can delay your period. Speak to us before doing this regularly.

If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Microgynon, it might not be absorbed properly. Take another pill as soon as you can, and continue your pack as usual.
