Eligibility criteria for free contraception:

Requirement 1.

You’re a person with a uterus.

Requirement 2.

You’re aged between 17 and 35.

Requirement 3.

You’re living in Rep. of Ireland.

Requirement 4.

You’ve a PPS number (PPSN).

  • Synphase is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It also helps regulate periods, reduce menstrual pain and manage hormonal symptoms like PMS.

  • It contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progestogen, which prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus and alter the womb lining to reduce the chance of pregnancy.

  • Take one pill daily for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break when your period usually occurs. Start a new pack after the break, even if you’re still bleeding.

  • Synphase uses a phased or triphasic approach, meaning hormone levels vary through the cycle. This can better mimic natural hormonal changes and suit some women better.

  • Yes. Many users find their periods become lighter, shorter and less painful when taking Synphase consistently.

  • No. Synphase only prevents pregnancy. You should still use condoms to protect against sexually transmitted infections.

  • Missing a pill may reduce effectiveness. Follow the leaflet guidance based on how many pills were missed and when. Use backup contraception if needed.

  • Some women find Synphase helps clear up hormonal acne, though results vary. It may be prescribed off-label for this purpose by a doctor.

  • Common side effects include nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes or slight weight fluctuation, especially when first starting the pill. These often settle over time.
